BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Police are preparing to arrest the hospitalized driver of an SUV that rammed into a crowd of people in Brownsville, Texas, on Friday, killing one person and injuring 13 others. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old George Alvarez, was under the influence of multiple drugs at the time of the crash, according to a police spokesperson.
Multiple Casualties
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Friday when Alvarez's SUV drove through a barricade and into a crowd of people gathered for a concert in a downtown park. One person was killed instantly, and 13 others were transported to local hospitals with varying injuries. Five of the injured are in critical condition, police said.
Suspect's Condition
Alvarez was arrested at the scene and transported to a local hospital, where he remains under police guard. He is expected to be charged with multiple felonies, including murder and aggravated assault. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victim or the injured.
