Tampons: Time to Change
Tampons should not be left in for more than 8 hours at a time. This can lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but potentially fatal condition.
The risk of TSS is highest during the first few days of your period, when your menstrual flow is heaviest. TSS can also occur if you leave a tampon in for longer than 8 hours, or if you use a tampon that is too absorbent for your flow.
Symptoms of TSS include:
- Sudden high fever
- Chills
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rash
- Confusion
- Seizures
If you experience any of these symptoms, remove the tampon immediately and seek medical attention.
To reduce your risk of TSS, follow these tips:
- Use the lowest absorbency tampon that is appropriate for your flow.
- Change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours, or more often if your flow is heavy.
- Do not sleep with a tampon in.
- Do not use tampons if you have vaginitis or other vaginal infections.
- If you have any questions about tampons or TSS, talk to your doctor or other healthcare provider.
